The Sacred Plant and Other ('non healing') Remedies

''The highest form of ignorance is when you reject something you don't know anything about'' Wayne Dyer.

We are indeed a strange kind. Trading nature's gifts for man-made tinkering. Throwing away indigenous wisdom and be content with a replica. The word ignorance is the first word that comes to my mind when I hear about patients suffering from serious conditions and who are unable to access the medication that could potentially help them relieve symptoms of these diseases and improve their quality of life.

Are Medicinal Plants 'Medicinal'?

Before the year 1937, cannabis was used as a 'cure-all' plant. As far back as 2727 B.C., cannabis was recorded in the Chinese pharmacopoeia as an effective medicine, and evidence for its use as a food, textile and presumably as a healing agent stretch back even further, to 12,000 BC. [source]

But as with other herbs, it is prohibitive to state, that cannabis or any other herb has some healing properties. Yes, you read that correctly, after the year 1941 in France, the herbalist, the most ancient trade in the history of mankind became illegal. There is no official herbalist degree as well. While it is possible, after 2008, to sell 148 medicinal plants (yes, medicinal!!!), the herbalists cannot provide information about the healing properties of the  plants they sell and many of them have been actually fined. Very strange indeed, considering that 45 percent of French use medicinal plants for healing and the market grows by 2 percent every year. [source]

As cannabis is a very potent medicinal herb, and, as mentioned earlier, has been used as a 'cure all' medicine, the French legal system considers cannabis dangerous and this plant is illegal for personal use. Despite the illegality, it remains one of the most popular illegal drugs. Only limited types of cannabis-derived products are permitted for medical uses. After 2013, cannabis derivatives can be used in France for the manufacture of medicinal products, but these can only be obtained with a prescription and will only be prescribed when all other medications have failed to effectively relieve suffering. Within the years of studying food as medicine, I've learned that our body has a great potential to heal itself. Is sounds natural that if our bodies have an endocannabinoid system, regulating myriad behavioral processes, including pain, mood, memory, learning, addiction, and appetite, cannabis would be the first choice to maintain homeostasis.

Cannabis sativa, like all plants, is made up of several chemical compounds. Within cannabis specifically, these compounds are called cannabinoids. Of the more than hundred cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant, THC is the only compound with the ability to intoxicate. Yet, it is the only compound that comes to mind to the majority of people, when they hear about cannabis. Try to talk about cannabis with your friends and if they are not knowledgeable about the huge healing properties of this plant, you will probably get a strange look. However, there are over 100 proven therapeutic actions of this amazing plant . Are we so foolish to ignore this potential?
