Negative emotions, traumas, food cravings or pain, raise your hand who did not struggle with any of this, ever. Anyone? Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) or Tapping can help with all of these.
EFT is a form of psychological acupressure, based on the same energy meridians used in traditional acupuncture to treat physical and emotional ailments but without the invasiveness of needles. Instead, simple tapping with the fingertips is used to input kinetic energy onto specific meridians on the head and chest while you think about your specific problem - whether it is a traumatic event, an addiction, pain, etc. -- and voice positive affirmations.
EFT's goal is restoring your mind and body's balance, which is essential for optimal health and the healing of physical disease. I was sceptical about this technique first, but it is amazing how effective it is.
1. First, remove your watch and bracelets.
2. Tapping is done with your fingers as there are a number of acupuncture meridians on your fingertips so you are tapping both on the meridians on the body and your fingers.
3. Use your index finger and middle finger and only one hand. Either hand works. It doesn't matter which side you use, nor does it matter if you switch sides during the tapping.
4. You should tap outlined points about 5-7 times. You can tap the points in any order, just make sure all the points are covered.
Tapping points are shown on the image above.
What to say while tapping
The phrase you say during tapping is as important as the tapping itself. The traditional EFT phrase uses the following setup:
"Even though I have this _____________,
I deeply and completely accept myself."
You can also substitute this as the second part of the phrase:
"I deeply and completely love and accept myself."
The blank above is filled in with a brief description of the addiction, food craving, negative emotion or other problem you want to address.
A wonderful example how to use EFT when dealing with stress and anxiety is shown here. I will cover more on EFT and how it can help you to achieve your goal in next blog post. By then, give tapping a chance and see for yourself how this technique can help.
